What is ESL?

ESL is an acronym for English as a Second Language.  It is specialized small group instruction for students whose first language is not English. The curriculum is research-based and uses the WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards in addition to the North Carolina Essential Standards and the Common Core standards.  WIDA is an acronym for World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment.  The ESL program at Alston Ridge Elementary is rooted in literacy and integrates Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics into literacy lessons.  All lessons include reading, writing, speaking, and listening objectives.
